Randy Frey

Pastor of Christian Education | Headmaster

Mr. Frey was born in Northern Ontario and grew up in the Waterloo Region. He earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Education from Nipissing University. He soon after felt the call to ministry and began serving at Trinity Bible Chapel.  He graduated from Heritage Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity Suma Cum Laude in 2018.  He was ordained as Pastor of Christian Education by Trinity Bible Chapel in September of 2019.  He has a passion for discipling and teaching children while showing them the glories of the Lord found in the Bible. Randy is the headmaster at King Alfred Academy as well as a Pastor at Trinity Bible Chapel. He has a beautiful wife named Nathalie and an adorable girl named Sydney. Both are a blessing from the Lord.

Monica Gordon

Administrative Assistant

Mrs. Gordon is a graduate of Pensacola Christian college, where she earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Broadcasting. After a brief career in radio, she spent several fulfilling years raising her children at home. Eventually, Monica transitioned into administration work, joining the Waterloo Regional District School Board as a secretary. Over the years, she’s worked in various schools throughout the region, honing her skills in office management and supporting the daily tasks that keep things running smoothly. Monica currently lives in Kitchener with her husband Dan, and their three children.

Hollie Wanders

Administrative Assistant

Mrs. Wanders has been involved and supportive in Christian education for many years. She has a passion for seeing children discipled in Christ and shown a proper biblical worldview. She has taken courses in biblical counselling and is excited to help keep the academy organized and running well.

Andrew Emery

High School – History and Literature Teacher

Mr. Emery teaches our history and literature for our high school grades. Andrew earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Waterloo and a Bachelor of Education at the University of Western Ontario. He taught for the Waterloo Region District School Board as an Occasional Teacher from 2009-2019. He enjoys reading history, theology, and literature. He has a passion for discovering and communicating the great ideas in literature and history from a Christian worldview. Andrew is married to Dayna and has five daughters.

Renys Barrios

High School – Math and Science Teacher

Dr. Renys E. Barrios teaches math and science at King Alfred Academy. Dr. Barrios earned his Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering from the University of Atlantico in Colombia and a Master of Science and Doctorate degree in Environmental Engineering from the University of Nebraska in the United States. He has worked for eight years in water and soil pollution research and he is honoured to be part of our faculty to teach science through biblical lenses to our students. He has a passion for drawing portraits, reading classical and adventure books to his children, and helping other Christians to grow in their faith. He has a wonderful wife Yenis and three children: two boys and one daughter.

Neil Brunet

High School – History Teacher

Mr. Brunet was born and raised in a small mining town in Northwestern Ontario.  Neil has attained a Honours Bachelor of Arts degree in History at Nipissing University and a Bachelor of Education degree at Lakehead University. While at Nipissing, he became the first student seminar instructor for the History department since the inception of the institution. Before joining the faculty at King Alfred, Neil taught for the Upper Grand District School Board for 15 years, teaching various grade levels.  He is excited about teaching students the truth, goodness, and beauty of the Classical Christian program through understanding our past.  Neil is married to Becky and has three children who also attend King Alfred Academy.

Dana Hong

High School – Math and Science Teacher

Mr. Hong teaches Math and Science for the high school students at King Alfred Academy. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor degree in Honours Science with a focus in Biology. With past youth mentorship experience, he strives to help students see the beauty of God’s creation and develop them spiritually and intellectually. In his free time, he enjoys reading, working out the body and mind through bouldering, and works to improve his chess and coding abilities. He is married to a wonderful wife named Esther.

Brandon Schlueter-Cat

Grade 5-6 Teacher

Mr. Schlueter-Cat was born and raised in the Kitchener-Waterloo region and is a recent graduate from the Bachelor of Theology in Pastoral Studies at Heritage College and Seminary. He has 13 years of experience teaching martial arts to children and adults, and has a desire to serve the church and the Lord by shepherding the young hearts and minds of students to grow in knowledge, wisdom, virtue and faith in Christ Jesus. He enjoys reading theology, history, fiction, and poetry, taking walks in nature, and spending time with his family. Mr. Schlueter-Cat is married to the love of his life, Carole, and together they have three lovely daughters, one of whom attends King Alfred Academy.

Jason Loo

Grade 3-4 Teacher

Mr. Jason Loo is a recent Bachelor of Music graduate at Wilfrid Laurier University. He has been teaching and working with children for much of his life and has a passion for helping children discover the beauty in God’s created world. He is also passionate about music, sports, games, arts & crafts, and learning new skills. His most recently learned skill is video editing. He is also a composer and an aspiring juggler.

Dawn Ronson

Grade 1-2 Teacher

Mrs. Ronson is a wife, and mother of three sons. Teaching is her passion. She graduated with a Bachelor of Religious Education after studying at Pensacola Christian College and Temple Baptist Bible Institute.  She has taught in a Christian school, homeschooled her boys, and taught Sunday School since she was 16 years old.  She loves teaching grade 1 and 2 at King Alfred Academy, and investing in the lives of the grade 1 and 2 class.

Joanna Reaume

JK/SK Teacher

Mrs. Reaume has a Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Guelph and founded a small business. However, she would say her greatest accomplishment is her six children and is grateful for all the life lessons they have taught her. She has personally witnessed the blessing and benefits of classical Christian education in her own children’s lives. She is grateful to be part of the classical journey with her students and their families.

Rebekah Hyde

Music and Resource Teacher

Mrs. Hyde is our Resource and Music Teacher for grades K-8 at King Alfred Academy. She received her Bachelor’s of Music and Bachelor’s of Education from Queen’s University. Drawing on her knowledge of the Kodaly method, her teaching experience and her years of choral singing, Mrs. Hyde has developed KAA’s music curriculum, which aims to instill a knowledge of music literacy, history and skill. Mrs. Hyde has a passion for teaching and strives to inspire her students to lift up their voices and grow in musical skill as a means to worship and glorify their Creator. Mrs. Hyde also has experience working as a resource teacher specializing in reading (phonics, phonological awareness, comprehension and fluency), writing and mathematics.

Karen Duarte

Latin Teacher

Miss./Magistra Duarte teaches the 7-12 Latin program at King Alfred Academy. She has always had an appreciation for languages being raised in a trilingual environment, and grew her passion for the Latin language when she began working in classical Christian education a couple of years ago. She holds a deep conviction for raising up children in the paideia of the Lord not only in her work, but also through her involvement in multiple youth and kids programs; and is excited to see how God works in the next generation. She enjoys learning and talking about theology and church history, having thought provoking conversations, and going on long walks on the beach to enjoy God’s creation.

Steven Cheung

Grades 7-8 and High School – Physical Education Teacher

Mr. Cheung currently owns and runs TEMPL Fitness in Downtown Kitchener. He graduated from the University of Toronto for Physical Health and Education. He also graduated from Humber College for Fitness and Health promotion. He has a vast knowledge of nutrition and fitness and is excited to impart that knowledge to his students. Steven has played varsity badminton, coached volleyball, and has been involved in a variety of sports.

John Maggs

High School – Music Teacher

Mr. Maggs completed his undergrad in music at Northland College in Wisconsin, after growing up in Northern Ontario and New Mexico.  An additional year in the Jazz Studies program at Humber Lakeshore brought him to Toronto where he taught instrumental music, geography and history at Queensway Christian College for six years. While the final few courses of his theological studies are currently on hold during this busy season, he is hoping eventually to complete his Master of Divinity through Grace Bible Theological Seminary. John and his wife Bridgett live in Waterloo, and have five children.

Kirsten Stefurak

High School – French Teacher

Madame Stefurak teaches our high school French program at King Alfred Academy. She earned her Bachelor of Arts in Languages at Wilfrid Laurier University with a minor in Ancient History. She is excited for the opportunity to teach students about the beauty of language, and to show them that learning French can be enjoyable. She lives in Kitchener with her husband Tyler, and enjoys reading, painting and singing.

Josh Janzen

High School – Bible Teacher

Mr. Janzen teaches Bible to the grade 7/8s. He is currently working for Trinity Bible Chapel and runs the youth and children’s programs. A recent graduate of the University of Waterloo, he loves reading and learning theology and using his gifts to teach people about the Bible.

Will Schuurman

High School – Bible Teacher

Pastor Will Schuurman grew up in Oakville, Ontario and moved to the Waterloo Region in September 2006 for his studies at Wilfrid Laurier University. While at university, he helped start Campus for Christ on that campus and developed a heart for discipleship and evangelism. He graduated from university in August 2011 with a Bachelor of Business Administration and a Bachelor of Science in Computer Science. He completed his Master of Divinity degree through Liberty Baptist Theological Seminary in 2017. He is excited to teach Biblical Interpretation to the High School students. Pastor Will was married to his lovely wife Erin on October 29, 2011. Together they have five children.

Zachary Smith

High School – Bible Teacher

Mr. Smith grew up in Waterloo Region and graduated from the University of Waterloo in 2016 with a degree and diploma. He oversees the Small Group, Evangelism, and Missions ministries at Trinity Bible Chapel and has regularly engaged with people on the streets to show them the truth of God’s Word and share with them the gospel of Jesus Christ. He is grateful to have the opportunity to teach Apologetics to the grade 12’s at King Alfred Academy. He has been married to his beautiful wife Christina since 2013 and together they have four children.

Nathalie Frey

Educational Assistant

Mrs. Frey graduated from Conestoga and Mohawk College as an Educational Assistant. She worked in the Waterloo Region District School Board for 19 years in that field. She worked with different types of students, though mostly helped with autistic and behavioural students. She is blessed to now use her knowledge and skills at KAA in the kindergarten class. She is married to Pastor Frey and they have a daughter who is a blessing from the Lord.

Neil Van Leeuwen

Custodian

Neil Van Leeuwen has worked in the custodian industry for many years. He is passionate about Christian education and is excited to join the King Alfred staff; keeping the facility clean for the glory of God.
