King Alfred Academy

Junior Kindergarten – Grade 8

The Elementary Program

Our elementary program carries students through the grammar and logic stages of the trivium. It solidifies the fundamentals (reading, writing, arithmetic, and a growing knowledge of God’s world and Word) while cultivating wisdom and virtue, preparing each student for the rhetoric stage of high school.

The Trivium

Building Toward Rhetoric

Each stage of the trivium works with a child’s natural strengths at that age. The elementary years cover the first two stages, laying the foundation for the third.

Grammar Stage (Grades K–4)

Who, what, where, when. Young children love to memorize and recite, so education emphasizes facts and foundational knowledge. Arithmetic and times tables, for example, are the grammar of math.

Logic Stage (Grades 5–8)

Why. Children develop a natural curiosity about argument, so students are taught to evaluate critically, distinguishing between concepts and understanding how they apply.

Next: Rhetoric (Grades 9–12)

How. In high school, students synthesize what they have learned into clear, eloquent, and persuasive communication.

Our Classes

Split-Grade Classes

Elementary students learn in split-grade classes, pairing two grades with one teacher. Older students consolidate what they have learned while younger students are stretched by those just ahead of them.

Scripture is not confined to Bible class: the biblical worldview informs every subject, and faculty model Christian living for their students.

Beyond the Core

Languages, Music & More

Latin & French

Latin, a hallmark of classical education, builds mental discipline and a mastery of English. We teach it alongside French, Canada’s other official language.

Music

Students learn music with a dedicated music teacher and perform for families and the church community.

Physical Education & Athletics

Students in Grades 7 and 8 take Physical Education with a specialist teacher.
